The Crumlin Road Gaol was established in 1845 and served as a functional prison until 1996. The gaol has reopened as a visitor attraction and conference centre following a major refurbishment. Today, you may take a guided tour of the jail and learn about its history, from when it housed women and children to the political segregation of republican and loyalist convicts and why the prison was closed. During your tour of the gaol, you will be taken to the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will have the opportunity to sit in the Governor’s chair, view all of the wings from the circle, and, of course, visit the condemned man’s cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.
