The Isle of Wight Reptilarium and Terrapin Sanctuary is a tiny Licensed Zoo located in Fort Victoria Country Park’s brick Arches, which were once used as Victorian Gun Casemates. Over 30 reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates are on show in four themed areas. There’s a Turtle Temple, a Desert Room, a Rainforest Room, and a Nocturnal Room. The Turtle Temple is home to the Pond, which serves as a haven for stray pet terrapins. Grab one of the explorers torches to spot the nighttime animals in the moonlight in the Nocturnal chamber, where day becomes night and night becomes day. The gift store is packed with reptile-themed items, fossils, and gemstones, and on the wall is a painting by local artist Tony Trowbridge portraying what was alive 30 million years ago off the coast of Fort Victoria! Because the Reptilarium is open all day, it is ideal to combine a visit with other activities such as touring the national park and beach.
