A horizontal lead miners’ adit (a level tube driven horizontally into the slope) leads to the cavern itself, a limestone cave, 200 metres below earth. Because the small adit is always flooded, entrance to the cave is only possible by boat after descending a lengthy stairway. The cavern opens up at the end of the adit, featuring fluorspar veins, stalactites and stalagmites, and the “Bottomless Pit.”
Scarborough North Bay Railway
The 20 inch gauge Scarborough North Bay Railway has been delighting generations of visitors since 1931 and is a must-visit attraction at the beautiful North Yorkshire seaside resort Scarborough.
Travel between Peasholm Station, the railway’s hub next to Peasholm Park, and Scalby Mills Station situated next to Scarborough Sealife.
Your 30 minute, 2-mile return journey offers a nostalgic way to travel but also doubles as a transport link. The train takes you around the picturesque Northstead Manor Gardens with views of Scarborough Open Air Theatre, before running in parallel Scarborough’s stunning North Bay.
Children can grab a free copy of Percy the Cats’ activity sheet, spotting landmarks along the way!
