Explore the rural Fursdon Gardens
Fursdon has been in the Fursdon family for almost 750 years, making it one of Devon’s oldest family houses. The views over the parks and beyond, across Devon’s undulating hills into Dartmoor, are spectacular. Despite its rural location, Fursdon is near Exeter, a culturally active city, as well as the communities of Tiverton and Crediton.
Outside, you’ll find a welcoming and relaxed garden with a mix of traditional and modern plants to explore. Roses, herbs, and bulbs; wildflowers, trees, and bushes This hillside garden provides interest and colour throughout the seasons, with sculpted pathways looping around its curves into a terraced and cob walled garden, and a lengthy walk down to the Meadow Garden, created as a memorial for a family member during the 1860s and undergoing restoration. Currently, there is a pond to attract wildlife. The garden is rich with vistas and views, with plenty of seats carefully placed to make use of them. At various times of the year, there is also a bluebell wood and a wildflower meadow to explore.
While visiting Fursdon, you may wish to stop at the Coach Hall tea shop for a traditional Devon cream tea or another home-baked delicacy. The cream is clotted and the scones are made from scratch. There is also a roaring fire to keep you warm on cooler days.
